A Just Transition For North Sea Oil Workers

What is a Just Transition?

A Just Transition is when the benefits of a green energy transition are shared amongst everyone. This means fossil fuel workers are guaranteed employment in these emerging industries. Studies have shown that upwards of 200,000 jobs can be created in the renewable sector in Scotland alone!

What would be an unjust transition?

An unjust transition is when industries are shut down without being replaced. Former coal mining communities are examples of this. In former coal mining areas there are only 55 employee jobs per 100 residents, compared to a national average of 73 per 100.  These are the most deprived areas in the UK and that’s because there wasn’t a Just Transition.
